Antarctica: Life on the Ice
The new anthology by
Susan Fox Rogers

I wanted to know what sort of tent I would sleep in at a remote camp, and if I would feel lonely waking in that tent -- or if I would even be able to sleep with that endless sun.  I wanted to experience an Antarctic wind on my face and understand what deep cold did to my bones.  -- From the Introduction

In Antarctica: Life on the Ice, outdoorswoman and writer Susan Fox Rogers presents the personal stories of those who have chosen to live and work in the most desolate place on the planet, Antarctica. Scientists, laborers, writers and more tell their dramatic, funny, and moving tales of daily living amidst the beauty and isolation of The Ice.
Realizing her childhood dream of walking in the footsteps of Antarctic explorers Robert F. Scott and Apsley Cherry-Garrard, Rogers spent six weeks in Antarctica as part of the National Science Foundation Antarctic Artists and Writers Program. She sought out the penguin researchers, geologists, cooks, pilots and others who are drawn, almost mystically, to a life at the bottom of the world -- and corralled them to contribute to this collection.
In an anthology that sparkles with drama, pathos and wit, Rogers presents these first-person accounts, including her own, of adventure and labor, optimism and grit, camaraderie and solitude. In this, the International Polar Year, Antarctica: Life on the Ice is a testament to the most enigmatic human experiment on Planet Earth.

Praise for Susan’s Books
“How refreshing to find a book  about the outdoors that addresses issues peculiar to women. The book will appeal to armchair travelers and women seeking inspiration and adventure.”
 --Library Journal
“The women who wrote these 20 first-person stories took the more rugged route . . . in far-flung places all over the world. Rogers doesn't fear any path, and could provide just the inspiration some women need to get out of that chair and head outdoors.”
--New Orleans Times Picayune
“An impressive anthology of original, true stories of adventure, work, life, and place in the last frontier.”
-- Midwest Book Review
“Alaska Passages resonates with vivid portraits that are sad, thoughtful, and funny.”
-- Fairbanks Daily News
